Autopilot VS. A Different View

When we get into autopilot, we create a “get it done” mindset.  This is so natural.  So common.  We just go through our routines and check our boxes.  We are accomplishing a lot and we fall into comfort.  We are making it happen and that is great.  But the nature of autopilot is that it becomes rote.  It can become stagnant and we can forget to do things with purpose on purpose.

This is where changing the view matters.  We had another storm here in Florida this week.  No real damage to our side of the peninsula, but we did have to prepare by taking in everything that could become a projectile or a danger.  I went outside this morning to put everything back in place and I realized that I hadn’t sat on the southwest side of my deck in ages.

I stopped and looked around and noticed how different things looked from there.  Same back yard. Same river. Same pool. Same deck. Yet they all looked completely different from that view.  It reminded me that when I was in graduate school, I forced myself to choose a new seat every time in the lecture halls.  Why?  Because it kept things fresh and interesting, and made me have open eyes to learning.

So here is my challenge to you.  Do something from a different angle today.

Get to the office via a different route. Sit at a different desk. Walk around the block in the opposite direction. Brush your teeth with your other hand.  Why?  To get a different view. To activate your sense of curiosity. To embrace change because change is the only constant.  Try it out. What do you notice?

This simple exercise has been shown to activate areas of your brain associated with creativity and problem solving.  Not only do you get to see things from a different perspective, you get to strengthen you brain as well.

Ok team keep on keeping on.
